Captain's Focus

I apologize for the late report. I joined Frank Hertsch on his 47 Viking, Sea Hunt on Saturday for day of trolling. Since we were fishing “Blind” (Capt. Len, thanks for trying all weekend!) we decided to head between the Baltimore and Poorman’s Canyon. By now, everyone knows the story! 61.5, 63, 65, 70, 72, 75 degree water right on the 100 Fathom line! We put out an assortment of 9 inch Canyon Runner squid bars, ballyhoo, and jets in the vicinity of 26725/42150. We worked the break from cold to warm without any bites. We heard several boats starting to catch near the 42250 line in 70 fathoms. Knowing the area would be crowded, we made the decision to work down the line insearch of our own pod of fish.

Unfortunately, it didn’t payoff!! We worked down to the 26726/42088 and finally got covered up by a triple of 40 inch bluefin (1 ballyhoo and 2 on GM chains). We ended up releasing 2/3. Continued to work the area and had our first Yellowfin bite inshore near 26750/42080. The 60 pounder crushed a ballyhoo and screamed the Penn International 50SVW in the short rigger position. All in all it was a tough day for the crew of Sea Hunt. Several boys up the road near the 42250 had over 10 bites. Hopefully we’ll get back on them this weekend!!
