Captain's Focus

Saturday 10/20:  Ran an open boat trip today with Larry, Fred, Jeff, Pete, Mike, and Tommy. Ran out just before 7 as the fog was starting to lift and found a small easterly swell so we shot right up the beach looking for something to drop the jigs on.

Started looking in the Asbury-Long Branch area off the beach, found lots of bait but no life. Kept running up the line, all the way to the rocks, and still had nothing. Mike and Tommy both had bites on stingo's when we made a drop on crazy marks, but got nothing to the boat.

So at around 930 or so we ran further up the beach and switched over to porgy fishing. I decided to drift as there was no current or wind early on, and that paid off as we had fish flying in the boat and into the cooler as soon as we got on good readings. It stayed like this for 2+ hours, until the N tide started rolling and the fishing slowed down. Nevertheless, in that time span, we had loads of bites, a lot of shorts but enough keepers (that we kept - over 10") to keep it interesting. We made one more drop on the way down the beach at the rocks and picked a few more scup and had a couple knucklehead seabass that went back.

We finally got into a few jig fish off LB late in the day on our way home, as we were able to jig up a handful of 12-15# bluefish, but no bass for us.

Finished the day boating ~250 porgies, keeping ~125-150 only 10" over. If there was any question they went back - also lots of seabass in the miniature size up to "would be" keepers + 2 nice blowfish.

Real nice day with a great crew - and man did we eat well. Pepperoncini from Fred, Pickled eggs PA Style from Jeff, and Tommy's dry-rub chicken were ridiculously good. Fred also hooked me up w/ a bag of fresh venison! Again, a great day, and lots of meat in the guy's bags.
