The first doormat fluke of the season reported to this column was weighed Saturday at the Tackle Box in Hazlet by Mark Kipper of Old Bridge who set a high standard with a 13-pounder taken in Raritan Reach on a bucktail with Gulp. That shop also reported stripers of 20 and 22 pounds trolled on Mo-Jo's in the Reach by Nick and Olga Thorpe of Union Beach.
Surf reports north of Seaside have been poor, and cold waters resulting from evening south winds haven't helped. I could feel the cool air created at the surf's edge while casting in shorts Saturday morning at Bay Head, and kept my feet out of that cold water. Vinny D'Anton watched a beach worker take a reading of 49.5 degrees on Saturday at Bradley Beach.
Today's doomsday weather forecast seemed to scare away most anglers though I saw more sun than rain in Monmouth County. I fished near my car on Point Pleasant Canal early this morning because the marine weather was reporting a band of heavy rain that was going to bring two to three inches of rain per hour and create road flooding. Actually I only stopped casting due to lack of action rather than any rain.
The Jamaica from Brielle got out for blues and did very well early and late -- with a lull in between. Dan Dausch of East Hanover won the pool with a 15-pounder. Capt. Ryan Bogan said the Jamaica II had much better sea bass fishing Sunday than Saturday, as several limits were bagged in 80-foot depths. They are presently fishing half-day trips with the morning devoted to drifting rough bottoms for a combination catch, while the boat is anchored for sea bass in the afternoon until the June 19 end of season. The Mega-Monster monthly fluke pool starts on June 1.
The Marine Digest and the plastic cards with all the regulations are now available in tackle shops.
Capt. Stan Zagleski got into large fluke Saturday with his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. Tom Hollywood Sr. of Staten Island got off to a great start with a limit catch up to 5 11/16 pounds by 9:30, and Tom Jr. also ended up limiting. Tom Formisano made the trip up from Bellmawr worthwhile with four keepers. Cynthia Soriano of Mahwah boated a 6 1/16-pounder for the pool by edging Larry White of Riverdale with a 5 7/8-pound fluke.
Capt. Jim Freda released a 43-pound striper that he trolled Friday on a Tony Maja #4 white bunker spoon.
