Johnny Bucktails won Saturday's Hi-Mar Striper Club Spring Striped Bass Tournament with a two-fish total of 75.6 pounds, but may have gotten lucky because original club member Gene Graman of Middletown didn't enter the contest with his That's It II from Sandy Hook Bay Marina in Highlands - but fished on Saturday in Ambrose Channel where Jerry Mc Menamy of Holmdel chunked a trophy bass that weighed 53 pounds, 7 ounces on the contest scale. Since they also caught stripers of 25 and 20 pounds, the former would have put them on top. Bob Matthews, at Fishermans Den in Belmar Marina, has been seeing his share of big bass lately. He weighed a 46-pounder that John Robertson of Philadelphia livelined off Avon, and a 34-pound bass caught by Ryan Gundel on Miss Belmar Princess. Matthews also reported better fluking, including a 27-inch, 7-pounder hooked from the floating dock there on a killie. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant reported that stripers up to a 48-pounder have been caught locally on both bunkers and pencil poppers lately, but blues remain far to the north. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, has seen much improved fluking in Manasquan River -- primarily on squid and killies. Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills followed up his catch of a 27-inch striper at Spring Lake on a sand flea yesterday by beachng a 29-incher this morning. Surprisingly, that bass had only small green worms in its stomach rather than the expected sand fleas.  Capt. Joe Massa fished with friends Friday at Norton's Point as they chunked 10 stripers up to a 34-pounder and only two big blues. It was a different story on Saturday as blues dominated while they picked five bass up to about a 16-pounder that was still carrying milt long after the May spawning season. Ten-pound blues were chasing bunkers on the surface near West Bank. I've heard there were some large makos caught over the weekend in the Warriors for Warriors Tournament and the Brett Bailey Mako Rodeo, but no results of those contests have been posted as yet.
