In addition to the Point Pleasant Elks Fluke Tournament (see previous blog), N.J. fluke fishermen can fish another contest on Saturday. Great Kills, Staten Island is very close to other Raritan Bay ports, and the Grandpa Savino Fluke Tournament there has a big potential reward of $25,000 for catching a fluke over 13 pounds. That seems like a daunting task, and it certainly is. Only one fluke over 13 pounds has been entered in the Fisherman Dream Boat Fishing Challenge for subscribers to that magazine covering from North Carolina to Maine so far this year, and the N.J. Beach N Boat contest fluke leader at present is a mere 7.73-pounder from Barnegat Bay. Yet, that prize was claimed in last year's contest -- and Danielle O'Brien of South Bound Brook boated a 13 - pound, 1-ounce doormat recently on the Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. The Grandpa Savino contest is standard otherwise, and costs $100 per boat to enter -- though another $100 is required to be eligible for the $25,000 doormat. Hours are from 4 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The captains meeting is on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Tackle U.S. at 187 Mansion Ave., Great Kills -- just a short walk from the docks. For information call Walter Fisher of the Staten Island Tuna Club at 917 375-7607. Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands reported good fluking in Raritan Bay today with some limits caught. Pool winners have been in the 5-to-7-pound class the last few trips.  At Belmar, the Golden Eagle had decent action during yesterday's afternoon fun trip with a dozen keepers, several of 3 to 6 pounds, among many shorts. Today's bluefish and mackerel trip produced more coolers full of those fish. The Ocean Explorer weighed an 8 3/8-pound fluke that took the lead in the seasonal big pool that's up to $2,800. The Big Mohawk reported fluke up to 7 1/2 pounds as bucktails tipped with Gulp worked best. Casting into Shark River was poor this morning. The only fish I raised knocked my small popper out of the water. Vinny D'Anton also only raised one fish there, but then went to Spring Lake to release a 24-inch striper that hit a Chug Bug.
