    The Panel preferred a fluke season running from May 23 to Sept. 27 in order to add some inshore fishing time at the end of the season when there will be a federal waters sea bass closure. New York's striper season doesn't open until April 15, but that's in time for the 14th Hudson River Fisherman's Association Striped Bass Derby on April 26 and 27 out of Atlantis Marine in Staten Island, Billy Joe's Ribworks in Newburgh, N. Y., and Croton (N. Y. ) Yacht Club.

    Though the winter flounder season opened in N. Y. waters on April 1, the info I received about striped bass opening there at the same time was wrong. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, reports a very few winter flounder have been caught on worms at both ends of Point Pleasant Canal.

    There will be several options for sea bass, but the advisers unanimously endorsed a new one that provides (with a 12 1 2-inch minimum) a 15-sea bass bag from April 19 to June 30 three fish from July 1 to Aug. 31 15 bass from Sept. 1 to 6 before a closure -- and then 15 again from Oct. 18 to Dec. 31. The Marine Fisheries Council will choose from among the options at the 4 p. m., April 3 meeting in Stafford Township Municipal Building, 260 East Bay St., Manahawkin.

J. quota to N. Y. and leaves us with an 18-inch minimum length, was the possibility that shore fishermen may be able to keep some 16-inch fluke in designated areas. Chris Zeman is the N. J. recreational member on the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and also the angler who caught the largest striped bass in last year's Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County Fishing Contest.

    Capt. Howard Bogan switched last weekend's offshore wrecks cod trip from1 a. m. Saturday to the same time Sunday in order to get fishable weather, and that decision paid off in a better pick of cod and pollock plus some ling. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar took advantage of calm weather on Monday to pick a few ling and small cod from local deep water wrecks.

    The weather was ideal as Crazy Alberto Knie of Estero, Fl., Luis Gonzalez from Homestead, Fl., and I cast jigs into mangroves to catch three redfish from 21 to 23 1 4 inches while Knie also released a short snook and a spotted sea trout on a D. O. A. C. A. L. jig. Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst had a successful trip into the back country out of Islamorada, Florida Keys on Saturday as he boated a few large sea trout while his adult daughters Danielle and Natalie caught some of just about every species except tarpon caught from those shallow waters.
