Phil Dulanie backed up a nice big-eye this past week with a quick day trip to the Toms Canyon on Sunday to fish the Jack Meyer Tournament with the Manasquan River Marlin Tuna Club with Adam LaRosa and friends and found the canyons looking promising.     Capt. Ron Santee swept the docks at Atlantic Highlands to get barely enough to sail for fluke with his Fishermen. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported good bait fishing over the weekend for chub mackerel, sea bass and sharks.

    Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking started slowly this morning on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands due to wind against tide,- but big fluke were featured when wind and tide got together. He heard it was better at Sea Girt Reef, but I talked to a boater at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant this morning who was there that day and only saw one short fluke brought up in a big fleet.

    Capt. Ryan Bogan reports Saturday afternoon fluking on Jamaica II from Brielle produced some limits of fluke and sea bass, with many fluke in the 3-to-5-pound class. Almost everyone on Elaine B. II from Bahrs n Highlands had a keeper, and catches ranged up to four, which is what John Vanderstad of Pompton Lakes had -- including the 5 1 8-pound pool winner.

    I joined Capt. Hans Kaspersetz for a couple of hours of light tackle fluke fishing in the rivers, along with Ray Flagiello of Staten Island on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall was aboard Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club as they fished the Manasquan River Marlin Tuna Club Tournament without success.

    Scott Leadbeater of Haddon Heights bailed out while fishing in Raritan Bay with his center console out of Atlantic Highlands when he got into surfacing 3-to-6-pound blues on light tackle as he moved toward West Bank. Capt. Stan Zagleski had catches up to four fluke on Thursday as Ken McGill of Atlantic Highlands won the pool with a 6 3 16-pounder.

    The spectacular run of fluke in Raritan Reach that produced many limit catches on party boats plus some doormats during the last few weeks came to a sudden halt on Monday -- but has since resumed. Di Stefano watched fluke party boats throwing back big sea bass, but anglers will be allowed two sea bass at 12 1 2 inches per day starting Friday.

    Matt Slobodojin, at Jim's Tackle in Cape May, reports Weather played a little bit of a factor in last week's fishing. The backwater fluke fishing is pretty slow right now and I don't get it, this is usually when it gets good in Cape May Harbor and the Intercoastal.

    The NJ DEP has announced that beach vehicles will be prohibited from a portion of Island Beach State Park from the A23 entrance to the jetty as of Thursday due to piping plover nesting. The south winds that have been blowing every evening lately have driven the surf water temperature down.

    The Jersey Coast Shark Anglers Mako Fever Tournament that was postponed the previous weekend ended up with another good weather weekend as the BNR Fishing Team won with a 266-pound mako that edged a 250-pounder by Blue Goose. Mark IV was third at 188 pounds, followed by Knot Know It at 176 pounds. The largest thresher shark was a 152-pounder by Miss Tess.
