Phil Dulanie backed up a nice big-eye this past week with a quick day trip to the Toms Canyon on Sunday to fish the Jack Meyer Tournament with the Manasquan River Marlin Tuna Club with Adam LaRosa and friends and found the canyons looking promising. Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking started slowly this morning on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands due to wind against tide,- but big fluke were featured when wind and tide got together. He heard it was better at Sea Girt Reef, but I talked to a boater at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant this morning who was there that day and only saw one short fluke brought up in a big fleet.

I joined Capt. Hans Kaspersetz for a couple of hours of light tackle fluke fishing in the rivers, along with Ray Flagiello of Staten Island on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall was aboard Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club as they fished the Manasquan River Marlin Tuna Club Tournament without success.

The spectacular run of fluke in Raritan Reach that produced many limit catches on party boats plus some doormats during the last few weeks came to a sudden halt on Monday -- but has since resumed. Di Stefano watched fluke party boats throwing back big sea bass, but anglers will be allowed two sea bass at 12 1 2 inches per day starting Friday.

The NJ DEP has announced that beach vehicles will be prohibited from a portion of Island Beach State Park from the A23 entrance to the jetty as of Thursday due to piping plover nesting. The south winds that have been blowing every evening lately have driven the surf water temperature down.
