The Garden State Outdoor Sports Show runs through Sunday at the N.J. Convention & Expo Center in Edison, and offers lots of attractions and seminars that can be found by visiting gsoss.com. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and opens with a seminar by Capt. Bill Sheehan on his 20 years as Hackensack Riverkeeper. Austin Perilli and Capt. Mike Corbilies also provide seminars. Light winds are in the forecast for the next few days, and that's good news for those seeking blackfish offshore. Joe Greco, formerly of Edison, hosted me Thursday on his flats boat out of Ft. Myers, Fl. as we sought out the early sheepshead that should be building up on their spawning run by March. Using live shrimp at several of Greco's favorite spots we had lots of action with small mangrove snappers while also releasing four legal sheepshead up to my 14-incher. The recent cold snap lowered water temperatures, which may be a reason for the relatively slow fishing. I felt right at home by also catching a toadfish. Vinnie D'Anton of Wall has been shore fishing near his winter home in Sarasota, and catching small bluefish on a Chug Bug during a dawn bite.
