Manzi wasn't also fishing in the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament, and the first day leaders held up in that contest during today's second day. Brian Mackay of Belford won easily with a 9.2-pound fluke. Tournament Director Brian Dunn is putting together the complete results which will be in tomorrow's blog.  Bob Correll of Bay Head ran his Boston Whaler all the way from M fanasquan Inlet to Raritan Bay yesterday to catch bluefish on sporting tackle. Today he joined a friend on his big boat to run 60 miles offshore for bluefin tuna -- only to have the same size blues hitting lures trolled on 50-pound tackle. Waters were green from Chicken Canyon to the Bacardi, and there was no word of tuna on the radio. After yesterday's hot bluefishing in Raritan Bay, the Golden Eagle from Belmar reported reading fish and watching birds work today, but having a hard time getting the choppers to bite. Some were caught, but not nearly enough. Maren Toleno of Mantoloking released a brown shark of about 40 pounds that she caught in the Island Beach State Park surf last night on the shark rig she makes for Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant released a large stingray during that trip. Capt. Ron Santee reported having charters over the weekend with his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands that had a pick of fluke plus some sea bass and porgies. The best action is on sticky bottom, and he warns customers to bring extra rigs as that's where he'll be fishing. He's chartered this week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning. The Mimi VI from Point Pleasant is running open this week from Monday to Thursday for bottom fishing. Call 732 370-8019 to reserve a spot. Jim Hutchinson Sr. reports "The weather is hot in Beach Haven, and the fishing on the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association continues to heat up on both inshore trips and those offshore to the canyons. Captain Jimmy Zavacky took the "Reel Determined" out to the canyon for its second offshore trip of the year. Fishing in gorgeous weather, 17-year old Matthew Began caught his first tuna ever, a nice yellowfin weighing between 60 and 70 pounds. The end of the trip saw the group seven for seven on yellowfins. Captain Bob Gerkens took the "Hot Tuna" out to a southern canyon and boated 7 yellowfin tuna with three in the 50-60 pound class along with a "gaffer" mahi and some skipjack tuna. Last Sunday Captain Bob did an "inshore" tuna charter with 6 novice anglers from China, Taiwan, and New York City seeking bluefin tuna. The group successfully fought a pair of bluefin with one measuring 62-inches and the other 58-inches. The smaller fish was released after a careful lip gaffing. A small juvenile bluefish was also caught and released by the crew. Fishing is good inshore on the local artificial reefs and wrecks also. Captain John Lewis had the "Insatiable" out bottom fishing and landed a wide variety of fish including fluke, black sea bass, and ling. In addition, an abundance of sea robins and small dogfish help keep the youngsters busy and content. Captain John noted a goodly amount of bait in the water so he anticipates the action to be around for quite a while. The BHCFA's Junior Mate Program is progressing with a recent class showing how to throw a cast net taught by Captain Anthony from "Fin Chasers." Each mate had the chance to work with him and improve their own individual skills. Additional information on the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association can be found at www.BHCFA.net.
