As predicted in tonight's blog, there were huge changes today in the White Marlin Open at Ocean City, Md. as 297 boats fished. There had been no qualifying white marlin for the biggest money, but all that changed when Business from Key Largo, Fl. weighed a 76-pounder to take the lead for $2,600,000 -- which held up as Team Player from Stone Harbor brought in a 70.5-pounder. However, before the day was out, Griffen from Palm Beach weighed a white of 86 pounds that will be hard to beat for $2,600,000.
Jersey boats were pushed back in tuna as Intents from Jupiter, Fl. took the lead for $460,000 with a 68.5-pounder. Blue Runner from Manasquan slipped to second and a possible $80,000 at 67 pounds, and Plane Simple from Fl. took over third at 64.5 pounds -- just a half-pound over Jim Stavola's first day leader on Milling Around from Atlantic Highlands.
The species count for the day included 67 released whites and 11 brought to the scale; one blue marlin release; three tuna; and one dolphin that didn't make the board.
