After having good striper jigging yesterday under windy conditions, Capt. Rob Semkewyc was looking forward to a big catch today on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands in good weather. Yet, all he found where he had been the day before was bait. After running around all day, the catch consisted of one short striper, a herring, a sea robin, and a couple of dogfish. With the northeast wind and snow forecast, the weekend looks like a bust, but Semkewyc is looking ahead to Monday for his next striper quest as we await the arrival of huge schools to the east. He'll stick with striper fishing as long as there is hope. Surfcasters will miss the west winds which provided lors of beach striper action even if almost all were small. Despite the very low ride this morning at Sea Girt, I managed to release six bass on a Tsunami Sand Eel and Castaways Super Teaser, but flyrodder Bill Massey of Wall was catching every cast after they turned off on larger lures. Vinny D'Anton of Wall figured a much smaller lure might be a better bet, and he ended up catching stripers steadily with the sun high in the sky by switcing to the 1/4-ounce Storm Searchbait. That blitz was over with the rapidly falling tide when I arrived late in the afternoon, but I still managed to release eight bass, including a doubleheader, by switching to a 1/4-ounce chartreuse Searchnait -- though over though over half of the bass actually hit the Super Teaser.
