Gary Quon, of Tady Lure Co. in California, is in N.J. to test his jigs on our stripers, so Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and I made a special effort to get him out this afternoon in between gale warnings on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. We found lots of bird action off the Highlands Bridge, but had already heard from Capt. Rob Semkewyc on the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands that there were only fussy short stripers under them. It certainly looked like it would be better than it was, but Quon quickly hooked up with one of his flat-sided Tady jigs in the scrambled egg finish. We kept picking away, and I even got a doubleheader with a teaser ahead of the Tady.  The fish seemed to be feeding on rainfish, which accounts for being fussy, but we still had steady action. Despite only seeing small swirls, I cast the big  Tactical Anglers Sea Pencil and hooked a striper that was just a bit short. On my last cast before heading in as the sun was setting I attempted that again and was surprised to hook a 34-inch bass. We also jigged two large bluefish in the 54 degree waters, and left them biting. The NW gale forecast and bitter cold scared most anglers away, but it wasn't that bad by the afternoon. Another gale forecast is up for southwest winds tonight before moderating Thursday afternoon. The prediction is only for gusts to 35 mph, so it should still be fishable inshore.  Capt. Russ Binns, of Shore Boating School, reports a friend trolled some bass on an umbrella rig today off Island Beach. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park weighed it's largest fall surf bass so far on Tuesday after Guy Abramowicz used an SP Minnow to beach a 43-inch, 25.5-pounder. The overnight striper bite has been good there, and they've had reports of sand eels in the surf.   Capt. Stan Zagleski said Sunday's blackfish bite on his Elaine B. from Highlands wasn't as good as it had been before the season reopened. Yet, there were some tog on every drop -- and the high hook had five tog. Green crabs worked much better than white-leggers or Asian crabs.
