Capt. Stan Zagleski was pleased with his fluking during the first day of the season with Elaine B. from Bahrs in Highlands. An early departure at 6 a.m. allowed for a good drift at the Bug Light before the crowd got there. After the drift died, Zagleski ran down the beach where most of the fluke were keepers. Al Waranis of Trenton had the season's first five-fluke limit. Greg Barnett of Trenton and Wayne Pinder from Red Bank each had four fluke. The pool fluke was a 4 3/4-pounder by Rich Daniels of Phillipsburg. The Jamaica from Brielle reported poor bluefishing after a fine week with the choppers, but they were around to see striped bass attack bunkers as some were caught on bunkers, crocs and jigs. The pool went to Mike Lachman of Collegeville, Pa. for a 32-pound bass. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant made it's first trip of the season today, but encountered mostly smallish blues -- though a 15-pounder took the pool. The Canyon Runner fleet heard from one of their subscribers that got out to canyon waters for six hours to troll 10 yellowfin tuna from 40 to 77 pounds plus  eight bluefins up to 90 pounds.  I joined Capt. Joe Massa for an afternoon trip on his My Three Sons out of Morgan Marina.  We fished down the beach where I'd scored with Ty Man from Highlands the previous afternoon, but bluefish had moved  in after we weren't bothered by them on Thursday. In contrast to the 42-pounder I released yesterday, the only bass I released today was a 41-incher that hit a bunker head left by a blue that had eaten the rest of the bait. I also held on to a couple of jumbo blues by using 60-pound leader. Several bass blew up on our bunkers and knocked them out of the water -- but wouldn't eat them. After hearing on the radio that bass were blasting bunkers off Asbury Park, we ran down there, but only missed a couple of hits. There were big bunker schools there, but nothing was attacking them while we were there.
