    Yet, sailfishing had been good Monday, and it was quite fishable for Capt. Scott Stanczyk on Catch 22 from Bud N' Mary's Marina. Unfortunately, there wasn't much action and the sails were very small -- making them difficult to hook on the balao they preferred.

    Though the fish weren't turned on as they often are on the flats out of Bud N' Mary's Marina in Islamorada, Florida Keys back country fishing was as fascinating as ever when I joined Capt. Rick Stanczyk for an hour of high speed running in his flats boat to Lake Ingram. Capt. Rick Stanczyk can be reached at Bud N' Mary's Marina (800 742-7945), where a fleet of flats guides charter for back country, bonefish and tarpon fishing which only gets better as the season progresses.

    Following is a eulogy for the late Don Ecker which was submitted by Sergio Radossi of the Hudson River Fisherman''s Association Fisherman and Hudson River Fisherman's Association Original Don Ecker's name can be found alongside Pete Barrett, Vic Alasio, Matt Staropoli, Dom Perrone and Doc Helden at the H. R. F. A. 's N. J. Chapter's the first organizational meeting in Rockleigh, NJ in 1969. (Those of you who remember newspapers, will remember how important these writers were to our sport)Finally Don Ecker founded the East Jersey Chapter of Trout Unlimited in 1971.

    The Garden State Outdoor Sports Show runs through Sunday at the N. J. Convention Expo Center in Edison, and offers lots of attractions and seminars that can be found by visiting gsoss. Using live shrimp at several of Greco's favorite spots we had lots of action with small mangrove snappers while also releasing four legal sheepshead up to my 14-incher.

    The N. J. Marine Fisheries Council took action before the public hearing by adopting status quo for this year. As noted in last week's column, many N. J. congressmen have asked the director of that agency to permit status quo while awaiting the baseline stock assessment which many expect will indicate the summer flounder fishery is actually in much better condition than present statistics show.

    There were no fishing reports in miserable weather, but the northwest wind is predicted to drop to 10-15 mph (though with some higher gusts) before a switch to southwest on Monday. If it makes you feel any better about the local weather, the wind chill in Ft. Myers this morning was 32 degrees.
