Trollers did very well with the ocean bass Wednesday morning, and Capt. Erwin Heinrich decided to head down the beach into a southeast wind that afternoon with his Scales N Tales from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands as I joined him along with an all-star crew of Jim Hutchinson Jr. and John DeBona from The Fisherman magazine plus Jerry Gomber of Folsom -- who came equipped with the latest in Tsunami rods and reels. Capt. Rob Semkewyc had a decent catch of bass up to a 34-incher and blues on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands in the bay Wednesday morning, but it was slower Thursday.
With big bluefish storming Manasquan Inlet and a long-overdue migratory striped bass run likely to turn on at any time, it's not the most convenient time to travel -- unless you want to catch a great inshore game fish weighing over 100 pounds. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant noted fine bluefish casting in Manasquan Inlet and River, Point Pleasant Canal and the surf.
Thursday will be very nice day but then weather turns for the worse Friday Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands said he had the worst possible conditions on Raritan Bay with a west wind against an incoming tide -- but his anglers still managed to boat a pool winner. Blues in Barnegat Bay are hitting both bunkers and poppers, while those in the surf are on bunker chunks.
