Finally by days end though top hooks would land double digits with decent size fish but we had a hard time just scratching out a supper for most anglers. Finally a little hope in fish that cooperate

Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report October 2nd 2012 It seems as though with the weather patterns that we have had lately we are spending almost as much time tied up to the docks as we have spent out on the water fishing however as the fall fishing season rolls on our fishing here at the Wharf continues to be very good with a nice variety catch of fish with the Sea Bass being right on top of the menu. Once the Sea Bass season closes we will begin to put all of our effort fishing for the Tau Tog with the All-Day trips and I expect to drop back to a four day a week schedule just to bunch up the trips after the 14th of October.

It seems like we have been stuck on a five trip a week schedule with the weather that we have had recently but for three days in a row last week the Ocean looked more like a mill pond than anything else giving us a few of the nicest days on the water at this time of the year that you could ever ask for. Rarely will you see the Ocean as flat as it was for those three days late last week, if anything it was actually too still at times with drift speeds far less than what you would want for the ideal Flounder drift, however with the number of flatties we were able to land and keep, evidently those conditions were good enough!

With moderate winds and light crowds a couple of times this past week we were able to just throw the anchor down on some hard bottom and see a nice steady pick with Croakers and a few Sea Bass and Blues in the mix. This provided what ultimately was some decent fishing for these couple of days despite some less than favorable conditions we were working in with the strong winds and the heavy swells generated from an offshore tropical system that bugged us late week and into Saturday.

Along with the Flounder Saturday we also saw a decent number of Sea Bass in the mix making for a very good fish catching day by just about anyone's standard. Monday was another anchor day with too fast of a drift however this time with a light crowd we fished close to home on the north end of the old grounds seeing a very nice trip catching a variety of fish with mostly Croakers, a few Sea Bass and some small Trout and Snapper sized Blues.

Early last week all was good and we were catching at times some unbelievable numbers of Flatties including tons of short fish and good numbers of keepers, however as the week wore on the fish had us all scratching our heads as to what might be going on and what our next move would be. Traditionally September has always been one of the best months for Flounder fishing but then again we used to always be able to fish up in the Bay on the open bottom for several weeks during the summer months and chase the fish out into the mouth of the Bay and through the rips as they exited the Bay on their migration offshore in the fall.

Conditions did finally improve by the end of the trip making it a little easier for the guys to hold, and by days end they ended up with what Capt. H described as a tough trip-nothing like we have had the last few times however I spoke with a few of the anglers that made the trip and they were pretty pleased with the catch of Sea Bass and Blue Line Tiles. Capt. H. D. also ran three very successful charters last week two on the Lewestown Lady and one with the big boat where he ran way offshore and saw real good action with the Sea Bass showing an example of what we might expect to see in a few weeks when we start anchor fishing full time.

The days are getting a little shorter and it's much darker in the morning when the alarm goes off making it a little tougher to rise and shine but the fishing action continues to be good both out in the Ocean for the Fluke as well as up in the Delaware Bay now with some of the best Croaker action of the year so far and even a few Flounder taken from the rubble bottom as well. We had a little shake up in the weather last weekend with a hard southerly, it forced the long range trip to be scrubbed and it made me fish up in the Delaware Bay for the very first time this summer.

There has also been several Spike sized Trout and some Snapper Blues in the mix and on one trip this past week Capt. Mike had one angler land three nice Flounder while jigging structure during a slack tide period of the tide. Monday was a blowout for just about all the boats and I heard the action was slow yesterday with nothing really standing out for the big money but this is bound to be another close tournament this year with lots of impressive fish hitting the weigh in station at Harbor Island Marina every day for the rest of this week.

For this I apologize! The Flounder action has remained quite steady in my book over the last couple of weeks with my all day trips, we continue to see modest to impressive numbers of nice fish on each and every trip that we have made. On the old grounds there are large schools of these Flatties moving around and once a good pile of fish is located you can work on them several days at times making life much simpler not having to deal with the short drifts and the tackle loss that you can see while structure fishing the artificial reefs.
